Clinical Informatics & Outcomes

This course provides an introduction to clinical informatics applied to multiple heath care settings from a rehabilitation perspective. It provides a context of challenges in the contemporary healthcare environment and conceptual frameworks to address these challenges and enhance value at population and patient levels. A model for translation of evidence into practice is used to explore the pivotal nature of clinical data by leveraging the electronic health record (EHR). Participants will compare real examples of collection and utilization of outcome measures and process measures, and learn key concepts to advocate for EHR build of data collection within feasible workflows. The course will differentiate between several healthcare professionals as our non-traditional partners to achieve value initiatives. A foundation is defined for data security, data privacy, and quality assurance for secondary use of EHR data. Participants will design an outcomes report and a process report. Lastly, EHR add-ons such as wearables and apps are demonstrated to add value to clinical programs.

Course Description

While “big data” and “ubiquitous information” are an integral part of most industries today, data and information systems to support functional outcomes in healthcare is not well developed. Rehabilitation professionals are well positioned to measure and enhance functional outcomes of our own care, and also consult other healthcare professionals in the optimal approach to measure outcomes that are patient-centric and cost effective. This is why the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) requires that informatics content be included in all DPT programs. In the clinic, translation of evidence into practice is not achieved through in-services alone, but rather through a formal quality improvement process hinged upon the ability to collect, interpret, and communicate key data. Leverage of the EHR is the main source of secondary clinical data. However, often functional patient reported outcomes are not included in the EHR “base model” and therefore require thoughtful and skilled partnership with EHR builders. Rehabilitation data must be built in a way that is feasible, efficient and of high utility for clinicians and also discretely available in the database for aggregated reporting. This course provides the foundational language and concepts of clinical informatics to support physical therapists as active stakeholders and leaders in overcoming many of the barriers experienced in the rehabilitation field with outcomes collection and utilization.
