Course Description

System Skills to Thrive in a Changing Health Care Environment

This course will describe the concept of system skills (ie., Intrinsic interest in data, the ability to devise solutions to problems identified by the data; and understanding of how  to implement practice innovations on a large scale) and their relevance to PT practice.

Course Description

This course will describe the concept of system skills (ie., Intrinsic interest in data, the ability to devise solutions to problems identified by the data; and understanding of how  to implement practice innovations on a large scale) and their relevance to PT practice.  The first part of the course focuses on the importance of measurement and the resultant systems data that is relevant to PT practice in the challenging healthcare environment.  The middle section of the course introduces the student to the concept of ‘positive deviants’ and provides case examples of innovators who are using systems data to solve clinical challenges.  The final section of the course introduces the student to the principles of diffusion of innovation and provides examples of how PT innovations can be widely disseminated throughout the field of PT practice.

The course will also describe the Boston University Activity Measure for Post- Acute Care   (AM-PAC) and discuss how it can be used to implement system skills within physical therapy clinical settings.

Objectives
  • Describe the 3 major systems skills needed by PTs to thrive in the healthcare environment
  • List the various intrinsic and extrinsic purposes of collecting system data
  • Apply  the major conceptual and psychometric criteria to evaluate when selecting measures
  • Provide examples of positive deviants who are using system data inside and outside the PT profession
  • Apply the principles of diffusion of innovation to the widespread adoption of PT innovations
  • Discuss the use of the AM-PAC to implement system skills in physical therapy clinical settings.
